Use your words
My buddy has pointed out that I have a tendency to compare everything with other things. I guess it’s because I really enjoy word play. I like a good pun, homonyms, and my favorite part of the SATS were the analogies. Words:funny , blogs:mental diarrhea. Metaphor and simile are the first concepts in creative writing that stood out to me in school because it’s so easy to get a point across if you compare a thing to something your audience already identifies with. The key to understanding is finding similarities to otherwise differing views, and if I can show you how what I’m thinking of is pretty close to what you’re thinking of, then there’s room for agreement. You know who did this a lot? Jesus. No one ever gave him shit for saying the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. You know, it’s like when some rich asshole pulls up next to you and asks if you’ve got any grey poupon. EXACTLY like this heaven place. Anyway, it’s super easy to compare things. I think I desperately want to find something that I can’t compare to anything else, to find that one unique thing that really can just stand alone, but until I find it, you can bet that I’ll be saying how this one MMO is like WoW but with Jedi, or how this movie is like Pocahontas but in space because you already know what I’m talking about.
Our greatest strength is also our weakness, so make that weakness your greatest strength.
